TikTok has launched TikTok Stories, a new way for users to share original content on the platform.

A select group of TikTok users can now post “vanishing” and short-lived content to Instagram Stories by mirroring many of the Instagram Stories features.

What Are TikTok Stories?

TikTok announced they will pilot Stories, a new way for users to share creative content. Stories will disappear after 24hrs. You’ll know this concept if you have spent any time on social networks- since the birth of stories on Snapchat in 2013, many platforms have taken inspiration and created their own forms of Stories like Instagram Stories, YouTube Shorts and now TikTok Stories.

What makes TikTok Stories unique from other platforms?

Stories users are able to comment publicly on Stories and see who has seen Stories content.

TikTok Stories is not a list of private stories viewed and the replies sent straight to a DM. Instead, it will display user comments on each story along with an additional tab that allows users to see who viewed each story.

This is a clear difference that will make a huge impact on brands and users using the app. It opens up the doors for more transparency in engagement and two-way conversation in Stories.

How to Use TikTok Stories

TikTok Stories are still in development, so you’re not missing out on this new feature quite yet.

A small pilot test is underway in multiple countries to test out user response before implementing a wider release. It’s not clear if TikTok Stories will be made available to the general public, influencers, or if the feature is here to stay.

How to post TikTok Stories, step by step

If you have access to TikTok Stories, you have a head start on exploring this new feature.

These are the steps to share a TikTok Stories story:

  1. Tap the camera button in the navigation bar to the left of the screen. You can record videos right on the spot, or upload photos and video from your camera roll.
  2. TikTok’s standard tools such as sounds, effects and stickers can be used to personalize your story.
  3. Send us your story.

If a user’s profile picture has a blue circle around it, you can tell if that story is live. To view their story, you can click on their profile picture.

TikTok makes it easy to consume story content. All Stories from accounts you follow will be available in one location on the app. Instead of being at the top like Instagram, they will be in a slide-over sidebar.

The TikTok For You Page displays content from all TikTok accounts, but the story panel only shows stories from the accounts that users follow.
